Manifest is a show about 191 passengers who boarded Flight 828 from Jamaica to New York City where they landed five and a half years later while the passengers felt no difference at all. The series follows the lives of these passengers and the strange callings they receive as a result of their plane ride. The show’s recent move from NBC to Netflix brought a heightened viewership to the series. Here are 12 thoughts I had watching Manifest Season 1:

1. Why am I crying – it’s only been the first 10 minutes?! The show’s ability to make audiences attached to the characters and gain an emotional reaction right off the bat is a sign of a very good start to a show.

2. The show is bravely diverse. Minorities aren’t just appearing as diversity tokens but they are heavily given a spotlight in every episode. Given the show takes place in New York City, that is casting done right.

3. The visual callings scares the sh*t out of me. The show has the right mix of unexpected horror at times that keeps audiences on edge.

4. Is Michaela okay? This hunk asks you to marry him and you reject him? Twice??

5. How are they always checking illegal information in the open?! Whether it is Michaela looking up information on suspects out in the precinct or Ben looking at information he’s not supposed to in the middle of the day in his work office or having a chart of the passengers in a non-hidden room. No wonder they’re so easily caught!

6. She looks so sus. You’re telling me she theorized the callings, was coincidentally on the plane, and have nothing to do with the experiments?

7. Grace is sooo annoying. All she can think of is herself and how much she’s lost when Ben literally is trying to figure out what supernatural occurrence happened to him the past five and a half years.

8. NOOOO I LOVE VANCE. Why did he have to die? He was literally the best character!

9. The show does a really good job of balancing religion from all sides, but also very contradictory at the same time, especially if you view faith from Ben’s point of view. Ben is a practical guy who believes everything has an explanation but also fully believes in the Callings at the end. At the same time, they villainize the “believers” who thought Flight 828 is a miracle while simultaneously have Ben and Michaela’s mom be a deeply spiritual person that Michaela looks up to.

10. I’m sorry, did Grace just call him Calamander? As if Olive wasn’t an unusual enough name for a girl, you name your son Calamander? What in the hippy –

11. This has strong elements of Lost, another famous show that premiered in the mid 2000s. From the obvious plane going missing, supernatural elements, and Ben – the nonbeliever in miracles at first but comes around to save the day.

12. All the characters are interesting and well-developed. They each bring something new and all the characters feel very cohesive and are not overly interesting or boring. It feels very real despite the supernatural element.

13. I like how it’s not overtly sexualized which is rare in popular shows now. It has a strong family element to it which is a breath of fresh air.

14. I love how they shine light on practical professions like police officers, doctors, and math professors and not just an aspiring writer or someone trying to become famous that is too often romanticized on TV.

15. There’s a death date? Gawd this show just keeps getting better and better.

Overall, the show is very enticing and keeps you on the edge of your seats. It’s definitely an interesting premise and is very underrated despite its growing popularity. Rating: 9/10
