Gossip Girl Reboot is met with controversy – some people like the idea of having their favourite teen show revived while others feel like it would do injustice to the original. Here are 12 thoughts I had watching the series:

1. If it wasn’t for the title, I would’ve not thought this was the reboot of the OG Gossip Girl. It has a different vibe – a more serious tone. If anything, this resembles Elite.

2. When they reference the old Gossip Girl characters, the show seems more like a fan-made series more than a show that can live up to the original. It’s kind of cringe.

3. I like how it talks about going back to school post-pandemic. It really sets the time frame and is the first show I’ve seen that takes place post-pandemic.

4. There aren’t many likeable characters. Even though the characters in the OG did really bad things, they all had an edge. You felt like you wanted to be them because of how much power they hold. The characters here seem like caricatures of the original.

5. Julien is an influencer, but that doesn’t mean she’s cool. In school, they are usually made fun of by people around them for trying too hard. Serena was the “it” girl but she wasn’t ASKING for the attention – she just got it without trying which was what made her appealing.

6. Audrey is the only one that’s intriguing to watch because she is effortlessly cool. She doesn’t try hard to be someone else she’s not.

7. There are too many people in the friend group. This could be a problem when you focus on too many people at once.

8. How would exposing students make them pay more attention in class? If anything, they would want to look at their phones more.

9. The teachers conspiring against students is just weird. They are forgetting that this is a teen show and the audience could care less about what the teachers are up to in their free time.

10. It’s great that the characters aren’t peer pressuring people to drink and asking for consent – however, if they do this too many times, it feels like the creators for this reboot are trying to spark a conversation more than create entertainment. The original Gossip Girl was full of bad influences but that was their selling point. The audience KNOWS they are bad as they do the unthinkable. It’s boring if nothing actually bad is done.

11. The outfits are not appealing. Gossip Girl was expensive looking but more than that – you want to dress like them. They weren’t too outrageous looking or so bland that you can buy it at your local thrift store.

12. The biggest flaw is the lack of character development in Julien and Zoya. It’s hard to understand Julien because you don’t know what she truly cares about. She’s an influencer but she doesn’t care enough about it to let it define herself – then her motivation for destroying others doesn’t seem genuine. Meanwhile, Zoya seems so naive that her suddenly wanting to take Julien down seems out of character. They both really have no real flaws.

It’s really hard for any reboot show to live up to the original but Gossip Girl Reboot is way worse than expected. Harshly speaking, this doesn’t seem like a show to last more than one season.
Overall Rating: 6/10
