1. What are those pills? According to Newsweek, the green pills are to help with anxiety and insomnia. Knowing this, it can be implied that the pills are to help orphans cope with the traumatizing situation they are in? They made them look so good that even I wanted to try it.

2. The show reminds me of The Handmaid’s Tale. The dark lighting, slow pace, and girls being stuck in the orphanage does have similar artistic directions as the show about oppressed women, although not exactly the same themes. Perhaps the The Queen’s Gambit will be following in the Hulu series’s footsteps to grab a few Emmys in 2021.

3. Is Beth a peeping Tom? There are various scenes where Beth is eyeing couples making out and explicitly questions Jolene about the male anatomy. These scenes are likely to show Beth’s transformation from a girl into a woman and part of that is being sexually curious.

4. You throw up when you get your period? I’m not expert but I have never heard of someone throwing up when they get their period for the first time. This sniffs to be the doing of a male director.

5. Her mom is a confusing character – one minute she is optimistic, the other she is depressed. It seems like she is even a gold digger at one point, riding off Beth’s fortunes. She would also be extremely sick but then suddenly be able to travel. It is never really known if she really loved Beth or if she is just holding on to what she has left. Sometimes it seems if Beth is cold towards Alma as well. Although at the end, Beth seemed to really care for her mom in the way she defends her against her adopted father.

6. I like how it doesn’t feel ultra-feminist. There are slight remarks about men losing their fragile egos and masculinity but most have come around to respect Beth and see her as a tough competitor. It is refreshing to see her take on chess competition because she has a strong passion for it not because she wants to prove the cliché “women can do what a man can do”. Being a woman in a man’s world doesn’t even phase her and that’s the attitude that inspires women to take on the world fiercely. It is simply more about a genius chess player defying her addictions and the odds.

7. It is breaking stereotypes of intelligent women being unattractive. Not only is The Queen’s Gambit helping to glorify intelligent women but women in chess, are usually seen as nerdy and unattractive. Beth breaks this stereotype by being a glamorous, smart, competitive player. Just like how Elle Woods shows she can be a girly girl with brains, Beth Harmon shows she can be a brainy girl with style.

8. Townes is HOT. He may be the only gay character that I wish so badly wasn’t gay. The sexual tension between these two are immaculate.

9. Beth looks like Emma Stone. In some scenes, the actress Anya Taylor-Joy resembles the La La Land actress with her shoulder length red hair, low tone of voice, and even her acting style at times.

10. There should be a Season 2! Although it is not likely for The Queen’s Gambit to be extended as Netflix has claimed it to be a limited series, there are many storylines that could’ve been explored. Perhaps she pays a visit to her father, Jolene becoming a lawyer, Mr. Shaibel’s backstory, and other characters that we’d love to see on our screens again.
