Second Act is a Netflix holiday movie about Maya, a woman with little formal education who ends up working in the corporate world where she has to work hard to prove herself. She ends up competing with other more educated executives and ends up finding someone from her past. It is a star-studded (well B-list stars) cast featuring Jennifer Lopez, Leah Remini, and Vanessa Hudgens. Here are my 10 thoughts:

1. This seems like a movie J-Lo produced and just hired her friends. Best friend Joan played by Leah Remini aka her real life BFF says it all. Although, her character is really funny.

2. Vanessa Hudgens is an underrated actress. We all know Vanessa as the sweetheart from High School Musical but she played diverse roles since that hasn’t been appreciated yet. V definitely outperformed everyone in this movie.

3. The twist with Zoe being Maya’s daughter who is also the VP of her company was good. Didn’t see that coming. That’s a plot line I don’t think Hollywood has ever done before.

4. They should’ve said Maya lied about her education due to conflict of work interest not because she wanted to seem perfect for her daughter. I mean…she already knew you were homeless and gave her up. Makes no sense.

5. Why did Hildy all of a sudden switch sides? They didn’t hint her at all being irritated by the project and in fact she seems really sweet. They really be adding drama for no reason.

6. Have they ever heard of privacy? The fact that Maya and Zoe just bring each other drinks in the middle of their meetings where they are developing COMPETING products just makes no sense and shows none of the producers have ever worked in a corporate environment. Also, when Chase just screams they found a solution with the door open when Ron has JUST left and he isn’t trying to steal their idea thereafter is just terrible direction and missed opportunity from the writers.

7. Okay but some parts are really funny. Like the rowing accident and the fact they had to call PETA because of the doves accident is actually hilarious.

8. The storyline is messy. There are too many subplots all revolving around Maya that makes it so confusing to watch. The reveal of Zoe being Maya’s daughter was a really good surprise but if Zoe knew Maya was homeless before, why does she feel the need to lie about her education?

9. Why did they all of a sudden make Zoe go to art school? There is too much character development in this movie that takes away from the main plot. They should’ve just focused on the two main ones – Maya getting a corporate job and her reconnecting with her daughter. It would be more interesting if Zoe and Maya had a fallout due to work competition instead.

10. This is the Walmart version of The Devil Wears Prada. They literally stole the plot – breaks up with boyfriend, pursues a high-end job by accident where she beats co-workers, her original friends being mad that she’s changing and ending up quitting the job because she found herself. Except there’s no glamour, no star-studded cast, and lack of sensible script-writers. Yikes.

Overall rating: 7.5/10
It was an enjoyable movie but the plot was super messy to follow. Although, the humour makes up for it. It actually is one of the funniest movie I have ever seen. They should have marketed this as a comedy instead.
