The hit Netflix series Emily in Paris, starring Lily Collins has been one of the most watched but also controversial for its inaccurate representation of the French and cheesy storyline. Here are my 10 thoughts watching Season 1:
1. It is more sexual than expected – the series is full of sexual innuendos which makes it fun to watch despite the trailer making it seem like an uptight feminist plot at first glance
2. It is full of stereotypes – from the French fashion, food, and overly sexual romances. While they are fun to watch, it would be nice to get a glimpse of what living in Paris is really like.
3. How does she find so many guys? She finds guys left and right without even trying. They are conveniently living below her or are the attractive clients she works with. Ugh, if only it was that easy.
4. There is no chemistry between Emily and Gabriel – Gabriel’s character is great. His storyline with Emily makes sense….except they have no chemistry. Every time she goes in for a kiss, there is a lack of build up as she just goes right in and not in a sexy way. Perhaps the actors can work on their French passion?
5. Are French people really lazy? They apparently start working at 10 am which may just be a reason why I’m going to start applying to work in France.
6. They stereotype the Chinese – Not only does Emily In Paris mock the French, they also stereotype the Chinese through Emily’s best friend Mindy who is supposedly the daughter of the rich “Zipper King” in China. First, Asians can tell that she looks more Korean than Chinese, her Mandarin is nowhere close to sounding recognizable, and all her friends from Shanghai being shallow are very poor representations of the International students.
7. The characters lack depth, development and appeal – there are one too many characters throughout the story and all of them seem very one-dimensional. It would be nice to dive deeper into their backstories or have them do something unexpected or suspenseful. Especially with Sylvie and Antonine. We got a taste of it but nothing was fully explained. She just looks annoyed all the time which is no fun because we know she is capable of more.
8. Emily dresses like a tourist – No wonder why she got called a “Ringarde” – she dresses like she is impersonating French people, not actually blending in with them.
9. French fashion is amazing though – Despite Emily’s style being a bit too touristy, the overall outfits look spectacular. I could get use to men going to work dressed in dazzling suits instead of ones straight out of The Office.
10. There’s definitely going to be a Season 2 – the season leaves us hanging with Gabriel’s decision to stay in Paris which is unknown what that means for him and Camille, Emily gets to keep her job after being rehired by Sylvie, and Antonine’s wife thinks Emily is having an affair with her husband. As cheesy as the storyline is, Emily In Paris is a guilty pleasure that we can’t get enough of.
