10 Thoughts I had Rewatching the Pilot of Gossip Girl

As Gossip Girl is being taken off Netflix by the end of the year, I thought I’d give this iconic show a last hurrah and rewatch the Pilot episode. Here are 10 thoughts I had re-watching the Pilot (obviously containing spoilers):

1. The writers hint at Dan being Gossip girl. In one of the first shots, the camera hints at who Gossip girls is by panning to Dan as the voice over talks about how their identity is anonymous.

2. Still mad Serena didn’t end up with Nate. Being reminded of how hard Nate crushed on Serena in the first episode makes it so much more infuriating that the writers did not put these two seemingly perfect couple together.

3. Rufus’s fashion is…not it. I know they were trying to go for the indie rock band look but he is dressed like a 2010’s teenage girl here.

4. Blair’s mom is a different person. By episode 4, Blair’s mom was recasted because the original one looked too young. This one actually seems to be more caring about what goes on in her life.

5. Why are chuck and Nate taking the bus with Dan. They were never seen taking public transit after this episode as Chuck arrives in a limo to school after this.

6. Dan is again hinted at being Gossip Girl. When Chuck gets up from the bus, he turns around to Dan who has been watching over them and asks ironically “are you following us or something” to which Dan responds that they go to the same school.

7. Chuck had a mom. When talking to Nate about his plans to sleep with Blair, he says “maybe I should swipe some of my dad’s Viagara, or my mom’s panels” casually mentioning that he had a mother. Later, the storyline was changed to him not ever meeting his mother.

8. They ruined Jenny. She was so likeable here in the beginning when all she wanted was to be liked by Blair, looked up to Serena like she’s her big sister, and shopping for her first ever party. The Upper East Side really did graze over her innocence.

9. Nate lost his virginity to Serena…in a bar…and Chuck was watching. In a flashback scene, it is revealed that the reason Serena left to boarding school was because she slept with best friend’s boyfriend. Chuck knew of this occurrence because he witnessed it.

10. Dan is subtly hinted at being Gossip Girl for the third time. When putting up posters to promote his dad’s concert, Dan suggests that he posts this information on MySpace, or a blog, instead. And of course Dan is one to know a lot about blogging…

Overall, I still thoroughly enjoy the rewatch. Hopefully the reboot coming in 2021 can match.
