BLACKPINK is in your area! Well, not physically but their Elle Magazine cover will be distributed locally in October where they talk everything from their work lives, fashion, and music.
In the interview, they talk about their fame and how they have been compared to iconic girl bands like The Spice Girls. Rosé says while being compared to a group “whose contribution to pop culture and music was so intense and massive is an honor, it was never like, ‘Let’s become this or them.”
Even though they are massive celebrities themselves, they still get starstruck. “Will Smith was backstage,” Jennie says. “He said, ‘You guys are so great.’ That was a starstruck moment for me, definitely. Like, Will Smith knows us. Wow.”
Jisoo adds that their fans really inspire them. She says, “We feel their sadness and happiness. We’re deeply connected.”
All this superstardom didn’t just come out of nowhere though. They have been training since they were pre-teens. Reflecting on their early days, Jennie says “We all lived together since the beginning. After our training time was over, we’d go home together and order food, talk about how scary the teachers were, how the work was too much. And just like how kids at school become friends, we just got along. It was very easy—we didn’t really have to try.”
“I was the first one on the team, and I got to watch everybody come in,” Jennie recounts. She speaks of Lisa, “She was just this young, tall girl with a perfect body…. She started dancing like a robot—she memorized everything in seconds,” Lisa adds: “My mother says I was always dancing and singing as a child, [pretending] to hold a microphone.” Jennie moves on to Jisoo, who was an actress before training and also the oldest saying that, “She came in, eager to learn everything and catch up to everybody, which was really motivating for me as well,” And Rosé “gave us the meaning of what music was supposed to do.” Rosé speaks of herself, “I was born and raised in an English-speaking country, so [Jennie] helped me out with the cultural differences. I had never danced in my life.”
Their training days may be over but that doesn’t mean they stopped working hard. “These days, we have no boundaries when it comes to work,” Jennie says. “Even on our days off, we’re basically at the studio recording.” “Life is work, and work is life!” Rosé adds.
Bekuh Boom, the songwriter who along with producer Teddy Park has worked on two of group’s biggest hits “Boombayah” and “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du” was also in the interview. She explains the meaning behind their breakout song “Boomayah” first being actually named “boom-bye-yay” as she was playing on the word “Kumbaya” but instead of “holding hands, it’s like ‘F—you!'” which goes along with BLACKPINK’s edgy vibe.
What’s interesting about BLACKPINK is that they are an international group that is able to appeal to a worldwide audience. Rosé speaks on the diversity saying, “Music [doesn’t] always originate from the UK or the States. It’s global, it’s Asia, it’s the most random places you can imagine. I’m very proud that we all originated from different parts of the world.”
Lastly, as fashion is very much tied in with BLACKPINK as their outfits during their performances are part of the appeal. “Fashion definitely empowers us as much as music does,” Jennie says. “Music and fashion—” “Cannot be separated,” Rosé contributes.
And finally, on their iconic phrase, Jennie explains “When we say ‘Blackpink in your area,’ we’re literally saying we’re in your area with good music, with good energy—we’re here for you.”
This was a very insightful interview. Hard work does payoff!
