The highly anticipated single from BLACKPINK’s Rosé is FINALLY out and it did NOT disappoint! It is the first music we had from the girl group since their debut album dropped along with their last song release from that era, ‘Lovesick Girls,’ back in October last year. Five months later, Rosé is dropping her first debut song, and is the second BLACKPINK member to have one after Jennie’s ‘Solo’. Here are 10 thoughts I had while watching ‘On The Ground’:

1. Rosé is a LITERAL princess. Name another person that looks as good in hot pink. I’ll wait.

2. The first scene is a reference to Barbie. Rosé sings:

My life’s been magic, seems fantastic
I used to have a hole in the wall with a mattress
Funny when you want it, suddenly you have it
You find out that your gold’s just plastic
.”

This shares similarities with Barbie’s iconic theme song:
“I’m a Barbie girl, in the Barbie world
Life in plastic, it’s fantastic
You can brush my hair, undress me everywhere
Imagination, life is your creation”

Not to mention how the whole room is literally in all pink.

3. The song is a true narrative of Rosé’s life. The lyrics in the chorus are:
“I worked my whole life
Just to get high, just to realise
Everything I need is on the [ground]
In BLACKPINK’s Netflix special, the lead vocalist mentions that being on tour comes with emotional challenges, particularly that she doesn’t get much of a personal life. She feels that often she is just living for the next show which is the best feeling ever but goes back to her hotel room with a lack of personal satisfaction, this includes her love life.

4. Running shots are kind of outdated and cringe but the visuals are fantastic so I’ll give it a pass.

5. Rosé is the queen of being sad in a car. *Throwback to ‘Kill This Love‘*

6. BLACKPINK often promotes self-empowerment and this is a prime example. Rosé doesn’t believe in love anymore so it’s dead and now she is in the heaven of female empowerment. There are 7 of her to represent the 7 deadly sins. And the black hat? A reference to Beyoncé’s iconic ‘Formation’ look.

7. This is probably the best visual from the video. Have never seen a shot like this in cinematic history.

8. This scene is showing the older Rosé in hot pink connecting to her younger self – the one dressed in white casual clothing, simply enjoying music, and being proud of who she has been all along. Realizing she needed nothing more. Another scene proves this as after spelling her stage name Rosé in the mirror, it quickly flashes to Roseanne, the name she was given at birth.

9. Of course they are going to play up the roses references.

10. While Jennie’s single is catchy and sassy, Rosé captures the softer side of BLACKPINK, the one that is more vulnerable, mature, and boldly embraces romance. This video truly feels , especially being an all-english single. We can’t wait to see Rosé perform this live. Well done!

Rumour has it…Lisa’s solo is up next. We’ll keep you posted!
