In another shocking twist to the Bachelor franchise, Season 23’s lead Colton Underwood has come out as gay.
He sat down this morning in an interview on Good Morning America where he nervously revealed that he has come to terms with his sexual orientation early this year after deep reflection from the past year.
The last we heard of Colton was when he infamously attained a restraining order from stalking his ex-girlfriend, the “winner” of his season Cassie Randolph, last September. To that he says had no excuses and apologizes to her as he really did love her which is why he was more confused.
Ever since then, the man promoted as “the virgin Bachelor” was likely embarrassed of this incident and deleted all his posts from Instagram and remained inactive since.
After their hard breakup, Colton went into an extremely dark place in his life and would’ve rather died than to come out. He thought of harming himself and one morning, did not have the intentions of waking up. He was driving his car close to a cliff and thought if he drove off, it wouldn’t be that big of a deal. He knew he needed to take back control of his life.
As the Bachelor is known and sometimes criticized for it being a show highlighting only heterosexuality, this was surprising news for a lead chosen to date 30+ women.
He remembered the morning he found out he was the Bachelor that he prayed to God, thanking him for making him straight, saying, “Finally, you’re letting me be straight. Finally, you’re giving me a wife, fiancé, and kids.”
The 29-year old Indiana native knew he’s been different for ages but couldn’t process it until the freshman year of high school but had already grown up in Catholic Church and that being gay is a sin.
The NFL player recalls his football career didn’t help with figuring who he was because if they made a bad play, it would be “gay.”
So how did his close friends and family react? Colton says they had a range of responses but the most common one was, “I wish you had told me sooner” he says with a smile.
The past year, he has bought a house in Denver and gotten closer to God. He use to pray to God to take the gay away. Now, he can have full faith.
Admittedly, he’s never had an emotional connection with a man because he never allowed himself to and that he still has a lot of work to do but of his coming out, he says he’s healthier and happier than ever.
