We all heard of the common techniques counsellors, therapists, and our peers tell us to cope with anxiety – to “just breathe” or “go for a walk” and “it will be alright”. But sometimes, they doesn’t work. And sometimes, these methods become routine and begin to lose its effect. Here are some unconventional techniques you can try when you feel out of control with your thoughts:
1. Read horoscopes – There’s a reason why many people treat astrology like it’s a religion – because it brings hope! Whether you believe in it or not, they are fun to read and can give you a sense of peace knowing that eventually, things will be better.
2. Manifest – You may be anxious because you are not happy with your current situation. Write down what you want improved and picture exactly how it’s going to happen. You never know – the universe may just grant you your wish but remember, thoughts should be followed by action.
3. Sing out loud – You heard of screaming out loud to release stress but that might be a tad socially unacceptable. Singing is known to release endorphins which are the happy chemicals in the brain. Pull out the YouTube tab and start jamming out to your favourite tunes!
4. Talk to strangers online – We don’t mean going on sketchy sites that leads you to meeting up in an abandoned cabin at 3 am, but using apps like Whisper or if you’re single, dating apps, can give you let’s be honest – attention – which we are all lacking during a Pandemic. It can be fun if you’re approaching it in a safe and open-minded way.
5. Online Shop – Maybe you can’t do anything to resolve your anxious thoughts but if you have a bit of coin to spare, buy yourself something nice to add a little bit of excitement. Your mental health is worth it.
6. Crochet/knit – This is another good way to distract yourself from your thoughts. Plus, it is a good way to turn anxiousness into productivity.
7. Download a mindless game – Fun but mindless games that don’t require a lot of thinking like Flappy Bird, Tetris, and Bejewelled, can be a great way to keep your mind from racing with thoughts. It distracts your brain in the moment and when you are done with the game, you may be too tired to be worrying about anything else.
8. Blogging/Journaling – This helps you spew out your thoughts so you can more clearly think about your current situation and put it into perspective. Writing it out like a story also makes it seem like just that – a passing chapter that will end eventually.
